Wood Burning Crafts to Decorate Your Home

Easy crafty design ideas can help you remember what you love about your home! Today we are featuring a wood burning tutorial that will give you something that you can do as a family, or just while you relax on your own. It's an especially great craft to keep in mind with Mother’s Day coming up. All of the materials listed can be purchased and delivered to your house via Amazon, and the wood burning itself is fairly simple as long as you know how to trace. Kids can easily do this while supervised by an adult and come up with all kinds of great things to display in your home from pictures to quotes or your family's name.

It’s easy to get your hands on a wood burning kit-  You can purchase just the wood pen and tips, or a full kit with stencils, stamps, and shading options for around 20 bucks.

Decide what you are going to use for your wood decor. You can use something you already have at home like a cutting board, lazy susan, or wooden utensils (You may want to purchase food sealer if you decide to keep them in use in the kitchen). You can also purchase or find pallets, wood slices, slabs, frames, wooden hangers, and blocks of all shapes and sizes.

Find the picture, quote, bible verse, font etc… that you would like to reproduce. Pinterest has countless free printables, but you can use a picture, font, or design from coloring books, notebooks, magazines, greeting cards… The options are endless and easily accessible.

1. Start with taping carbon transfer paper on top of the wood (also available on Amazon). They offer hundreds in a package, but look for a small package of 25 sheets since you can keep reusing it over and over.

2. Take a #2 pencil to trace the design over the carbon paper.

3. When you've transferred the design. It’s time to take the paper off and  fill your design in with the hot tool. For simple fonts and line drawing, use the tip that looks like a pencil. However, you can play around with the different kinds of shading and learn just how crafty you really are.

Some things to keep in mind: Use pliers to change tips when hot (DO NOT TOUCH!)

Also, keep a container close by for the hot tips if you are switching them out or cooling them down. Some suggestions are a ceramic bowl, cast iron skillet, or other heat proof container. Also, make sure you remove anything that is heat sensitive before you start with the burning tool. You can use graphite transfer paper instead of carbon paper and erase the marks after you are done burning if you want to keep them light.
