7 Things People Forget to Do Before They Move

Any time you're moving, whether it's across town or across the country, it can be a stressful experience. You've packed away everything in boxes with bubble wrap, but you can't help but feel like you've forgotten something. Don't worry, we have put together this checklist of things people often forget to do before moving! Review throughout the packing and moving process to avoid these common mistakes!

1 Month before: Cancel Recurring Charges

Taking care of a gym membership or other subscription services may be the last thing on your mind before moving day. 

Worse, those recurring charges will keep being charged to your credit card while you're trying to unpack and get your new home in order. Get a jump on canceling these at least a month before your big move, since most gyms and services require a 30-day notice.

2 Weeks before: Call Your Car Insurance Company

The Department of Motor Vehicles advises people in the process of moving to closely manage their car insurance during the transition. Many states have different requirements than others for coverage. Even in the same city, rates can differ from neighborhood to neighborhood, calling your provider will help keep up with deadlines for updating coverage at your new address.

2 Weeks before: Early Change of Address

Most people know the US Postal Service offer an online form to quickly change an address for all of your mail, but you don't have to wait until the moving day to fill it out. 

Complete the form two weeks in advance and you'll see your forwarded mail arriving as you move in. 

1 week before: Organize Your Finances

In the whirlwind of moving, it's easy to lose track of bills packed away inside of all of your boxes. Set up bills like phone or mortgage to Autopay to avoid forgetting payment and getting hit with late fees. Be sure to have money set aside in case unexpected costs occur during your move.

1 day before: Snap Pictures of Your Electronics

Take pictures of your TV and cable/satellite box, stereo system and computer wiring setup prior to moving, it will make setting everything up in your new home much easier. 

Label different cords, cables and wires with tape to know which cables go with which electronics.

1 day before: Pack Your Plants

Whether it's your favorite house plant or a rose bush you planted outside of your old home, you'll want to plan on packing your plants last so they don't die during the move. 

If you're digging up plants from your yard, make sure you don't pack away your shovels and have buckets to put your plants in.

1 day before: Pack a Go-To Box

Set aside one box for the first 24 hours, paper towels, cleaning supplies, clean sheets, towels, paper plates and silverware, toilet paper, change of clothes and even a bottle of champagne to celebrate your new home!
