10 Fun Projects to Occupy Your Kids While Schools are Closed

With many school districts closing in these difficult times surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic, a lot of parents are finding themselves at home with their children and need a way to keep the kids occupied. We've put together a list of 10 ideas for ways to keep your little ones busy while you're all stuck at home together.

1. Make a cardboard or pillow fort

Kids love building things, give them blankets, couch pillows, old cardboard boxes, turn upside down chairs, so they can create their own little worlds!

2. Set up a treasure or scavenger hunt

Treasure hunts are pretty easy and depending on how many items there are, could last a while. Hide anywhere from 10 to 20 items around the house or outside to keep kids occupied for a few hours.

3. Bake together

Bake anything your kids like: cookies, cakes, brownies. Baking is a great lesson in measuring, ingredients, and of course, making delicious baked goodies.

4. Take a virtual field trip to Yellowstone National Park

Virtually visit the Mud Volcano, Mammoth Hot Springs, and so much more with a digital field trip to Yellowstone.

5. Watch the beluga whales at the Georgia Aquarium

Break out the envelopes, the stamps, the pens, and paper. It really feels great to recieve a letter from a friend or family member through the good, old-fashion snail mail. Write a mail a letter to someone you love, like to your children's grandmother and grandfather, or a family member who lives far away.

7. Make your own play dough

Play dough is suprisingly easy to make with common household items. Check out this one from I Heart Naptime. All you need are quart-sized bags, all-purpose flour, salt, cream of tartar, water, veggie or coconut oil, and food coloring.

8. Play cards or board games

Playing card games like Rummy, War, Go Fish, Solitatire, Uno, Old Maid, or playing board games like Scrabble, Monopoly, Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders, etc can be fun for the whole family.

9. Take a virtual tour of a farm

Children love learning about what it takes to run a farm. On this website, you can meet farm animals, learn about crops, and more by taking a virtual farm tour on Farm 360.

10. Bird watch

Look up bird local to your area and teach your kids about them, See if they can identify five types of birds common to your part of the country! All you have to do is look out the window, you can also put out birdseed or crackers to try and attract more birds!
